The Cigna Group is advancing its ongoing efforts to simplify health care and foster patient-centered innovation by joining the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Health Technology Ecosystem.

The Ecosystem’s objective is to foster collaboration across the health care industry – including data networks, electronic health record systems, app developers, providers, health plans, and more – to provide patients with greater access to their health information.

An ongoing commitment to make health care better

This decision builds upon The Cigna Group’s “Let’s Make It Better” pledge, announced earlier this year, and underscores our focus on patient-centered care. By participating in the Ecosystem, we seek to accelerate the development of a seamless, patient-centered system where individuals can access claims, prior authorizations, and clinical data from current and past payers and providers – all through the apps they already use. The goal is to reduce administrative burden and empower people to make informed health decisions.

“People want health care to be simple and accessible, but too often it’s anything but," said Katya Andresen, chief digital and analytics officer at The Cigna Group. "We are excited to join the CMS Health Technology Ecosystem and look forward to improving access to health information so that individuals have the confidence they deserve to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families."

Leveraging artificial intelligence and technology to streamline health care experience

This initiative also aligns with our commitment to harness new technologies to streamline workflows and advance health data interoperability. Participation in the Ecosystem provides an opportunity to test new solutions, including payer application programming interfaces (APIs) to support data exchange and interoperability required under CMS regulations and our voluntary commitments related to electronic prior authorization exchange. These advancements are intended to break down the longstanding silos that complicate health care and deliver real value for patients and providers alike.

As a global health company, The Cigna Group’s mission is to improve the health and vitality of those we serve. Our Let’s Make It Better commitment guides every partnership and innovation, driving progress toward a simpler, smarter health care system.
