The Cigna Group and OpenAI Collaborate to Advance Care and Personalized Support for Patients with Complex Conditions
  • Initial capabilities focus on oncology, helping patients receive more personalized support and care teams identify emerging needs sooner
  • Collaboration establishes a foundation for AI-enabled clinical support and health intelligence capabilities across The Cigna Group’s ecosystem to support patients with a broad range of health conditions

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., Sept. 23, 2026 - The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI) and OpenAI today announced a collaboration to improve health outcomes for patients with complex conditions. The Cigna Group will integrate OpenAI's frontier reasoning capabilities into clinical workflows and customer experiences across The Cigna Group ecosystem, enabling more personalized support for patients. Initial new capabilities will focus on supporting patients with cancer by helping identify emerging needs earlier, personalizing support and improving care coordination throughout the cancer journey, including between doctor visits when treatment side effects, new symptoms and questions often arise.

The collaboration combines OpenAI's frontier model capability with The Cigna Group's deep clinical expertise, care-management capabilities and integrated health insights to help deliver enhanced support to each patient. For patients, the collaboration will support more personalized outreach and direct engagement, helping them understand next steps, navigate care and connect with appropriate clinicians, programs and other resources when they need support, within The Cigna Group channels, programs and care experiences. Over time, the collaboration will create a broad range of health intelligence capabilities to better support patients with a wide range of health conditions.

“Receiving a complex diagnosis alters a person’s life instantly. Patients find themselves confronted with difficult treatment decisions, emotional stress and a health care system that can be hard to navigate,” said Dr. Amy Flaster, Chief Medical Officer, The Cigna Group. “Whether a patient is struggling with treatment side effects or coping with the emotional impact of a diagnosis, bringing the power of OpenAI to The Cigna Group will help connect patients to our specialized clinicians, resources and support. This is how we can begin to realize the promise of AI to unlock better health outcomes: identifying issues earlier, offering support between doctors’ visits, and making complex care feel less overwhelming.”

“The real promise of AI is not simply that it can help us move faster. It helps us make every patient experience more personalized,” said Katya Andresen, Chief Data, Digital & AI Officer, The Cigna Group. “By combining OpenAI’s frontier model capability with our clinical expertise, integrated health care context and ability to connect people to care, we are building a clinical intelligence capability that can help anticipate needs earlier, support more personalized action and improve how we serve patients over time.”

Improving Patient Outcomes Through Greater Clinical Intelligence Across The Cigna Group

One of the first new capabilities provides oncology nurses and case managers across Accredo Specialty Pharmacy and Cigna Healthcare with AI-enabled capabilities that bring together clinical, pharmacy, behavioral and benefits information into a more complete view of each patient.

The collaboration is designed to create a continuous learning loop that keeps the patient at the center. Relevant clinical, pharmacy, behavioral and benefits information will help anticipate what a patient may need and determine the right support. Insights from patient responses, including their questions, reported side effects, navigation needs and communications preferences, can provide additional evidence about what support is most helpful for different patients and at different points in their journeys. Over time, these insights can help inform future guidance, strengthen clinical workflows and make complex care journeys feel less difficult to navigate.

“AI should make healthcare easier to understand and navigate for patients and the people caring for them,” said Dr. Nate Gross, Head of Health at OpenAI. “Together with The Cigna Group we are delivering on that goal through AI capabilities that build on the expertise and judgment clinical teams bring to patient care.”

The collaboration builds on AI-enabled work already underway across The Cigna Group. This includes Accredo’s Pharmacy Forward initiative, which is expected to significantly improve medication adherence and accelerate time to treatment, and Cigna Healthcare's expansion of personalized care-management capabilities, which is reducing avoidable hospital stays by 42% among engaged patients. These efforts are helping create the clinical, operational and data foundation for more proactive, connected and personalized support across a range of health needs.

Responsible AI and Clinical Oversight

This work is one of several AI-enabled initiatives across The Cigna Group, involving a range of technology partners. It operates under the company’s responsible AI, privacy, security and clinical-governance requirements. AI-generated information is subject to appropriate human oversight and clinicians remain responsible for patient care and clinical decisions. Patient and member information is handled in a manner consistent with applicable privacy, security and regulatory requirements, and no patient or member data is maintained by OpenAI or used by OpenAI for model training.
