BLOOMFIELD, Conn., Nov. 24, 2025 -- The Cigna Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI), has selected four Hartford-based nonprofit organizations to receive funding for programs that aim to address root causes of specific health disparities most prevalent in the community. This group of nonprofit grantees marks the second cohort of The Cigna Group Foundation’s Health Equity Impact Fund, which builds upon the work of seven current grantees.
Pictured above are representatives from seven nonprofit organizations with The Cigna Group’s first-ever cohort of its Health Equity Impact Fund, which were announced in 2024.
“As a company whose mission is to improve the health and vitality of those we serve, we cannot overlook the health disparities that are especially pronounced in our own backyard,” said Andrea Nelson, Board Member, The Cigna Group Foundation. “We are committed to helping remove barriers so that more people in Hartford can get the quality health care they need, when they need it. We are proud to collaborate with these incredible nonprofits to advance health equity for all.”
Research shows that Hartford struggles with high poverty rates and lower life expectancy compared to other Connecticut cities. Additionally, Hartford residents are disproportionately likely to forgo health care due to lack of access to reliable transportation, and lack of access to primary care and/or lack of trust in care.
The four nonprofits and respective projects selected to receive grant funding:
- American Heart Association, CT Chapter: Improving equitable treatment for hypertension and diabetes through culturally appropriate care and community-clinical linkages.
- Hartford Hospital: Expanding its Food4Health program with transportation support and community health workers to ensure consistent access to nutrition services.
- Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center: Launching a hybrid hypertension clinic that integrates virtual care, community health workers, and personalized education.
- YMCA of Metropolitan Hartford: Implementing the Health Passport Program to provide tailored wellness plans and transportation support for underserved residents.
Last year, The Cigna Group Foundation announced a philanthropic and community engagement initiative that committed more than $27 million in grants over the next three years to nonprofit organizations focused on improving youth mental health, improving veteran mental health through housing stability, and reducing barriers to health equity. As a grant program, The Cigna Group Health Equity Impact Fund will invest $9 million over a three-year period with a focus on addressing health disparities in specific locations.
