The Cigna Group Foundation Invests $1.5 Million To Improve Health Care Access in Greater Hartford
Six nonprofits will help more than 2,000 residents access health care through mobile clinics, get rides to health visits, and participate in wellness programs

HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 29, 2026 – The Cigna Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Cigna Group, has awarded $1.5 million to six Greater Hartford nonprofits supporting community-led projects that expand access to care through mobile clinics, transportation to health visits, care navigation and wellness programs tailored to the communities they serve. Over the next two years, these projects are expected to reach more than 2,000 residents.

“Our roots in Connecticut run deep, as does our commitment to the communities where our colleagues live and work,” said Sara Quist, senior director of community programs and president of The Cigna Group Foundation. “Through this investment, we’re helping local organizations turn that commitment into practical support for Greater Hartford residents.”

The latest grants build on investments made through the Health Equity Impact Fund since 2024. For example, Hartford Public Library’s Health on the Go program has helped residents like Angel overcome transportation barriers and focus on their health.

“When my primary care provider recommended this program, it was like seeing the light again,” Angel said. “It took a large weight off of our shoulders.” Transportation support gave Angel and his family one less thing to worry about and more time to focus on staying healthy.

The 2026 Greater Hartford grantees are:

  • Chrysalis Center, Inc. will use its Connected Care Transportation Initiative to coordinate non-emergency rides for approximately 500 vulnerable Hartford adults each year, helping them access medical appointments, behavioral health and recovery services, pharmacies and wellness activities.
  • Hartford Public Library will expand Health on the Go Plus to provide rides, bus passes, bilingual help understanding and using health benefits, and wellness activities tailored to the communities it serves, connecting Hartford adults with care and health resources.
  • InterCommunity, Inc. will pilot a Community Health Navigator to help approximately 400 Hartford residents address transportation, technology and other challenges that can make it harder to get care, while connecting them with primary care, behavioral health care, substance use treatment and community resources.
  • Malta House of Care, Inc. will add a Community Health Access Navigator to connect uninsured East Hartford adults with free primary care, transportation and resources addressing food, housing, behavioral health, benefits and other needs.
  • University of Connecticut Foundation, Inc. will develop a practical guide shaped by community input to help Hartford health systems improve language access, train staff, connect patients with interpreters, provide discharge information in multiple languages and deliver care that meets patients’ language needs.
  • Wheeler Clinic, Inc. will expand mobile health services at trusted community sites, combining bilingual care with help understanding benefits, nutrition counseling, transportation and phone support, and connections to food, housing and other resources.

Building on early impact in Hartford

Returning grantees are already delivering positive outcomes for Hartford residents. In 2024, Malta House of Care delivered 320 primary care visits through its East Hartford mobile clinic, while Wheeler Clinic reached more than 300 residents through mobile care, outreach, and education. A University of Connecticut Foundation-led project engaged more than 47 patients, interpreters and health care professionals to identify language-access barriers.
