The Cigna Group Named Among America’s Climate Leaders by USA TODAY

BLOOMFIELD, Conn., July 1, 2024 — Global health company The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI) announced today that it has been named one of America’s Climate Leaders 2024 by USA TODAY. The Cigna Group was largely recognized for its efforts to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in its global operations and facilities.

“We believe responsible environmental stewardship can help improve the health and vitality of all communities, and this recognition is a testament to our continued dedication to reduce our environmental impact throughout the world,” said Geneva Brown, vice president of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at The Cigna Group. “We are proud of our progress and recognize there is always more work to do to make our business and the world more sustainable. We strive to identify new efficiencies and make strategic investments that reduce our environmental impacts.”

The Cigna Group has set goals to reduce the environmental impacts of its operations, such as electricity and fuel usage in buildings and vehicles, which are considered Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions. These goals include:

  • Sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
  • Reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030.
  • Achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2040.

To evolve its climate commitments, The Cigna Group completed an inventory of its Scope 3 GHG emissions, which accounts for its value chain, such as goods and services purchased, how employees travel to and for work, and several other areas of the business. The company intends to disclose additional Scope 3 emissions categories in its 2023 ESG Report slated to publish this summer.

Additionally, The Cigna Group has committed to developing a science-based target over the next two years and seeking validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This is a defined path to reduce emissions in line with climate science and an international treaty on climate change.

To compile the rankings, USA TODAY and Statista Inc., a leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider, looked at companies based in the United States with more than $50 million in revenue in 2022 that achieved the biggest reductions in the core emissions intensity – which involve Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions in relation to revenue – between the years 2020 and 2022.
